Our friend Alan Best over at architects Eight Inc., showed us a picture of a mug like this which he gave to his father for Christmas (and found at Urban Outfitters, of all places). Alan’s father had a massive stroke some fifteen years ago and lately he’s been having greater difficulty using his good hand. As Alan explained, this “knuckle duster” mug is a great design not only because it allows his dad to drink his coffee unassisted, but because it’s a humorous icon of toughness rather than another reminder of his condition (like a sippy cup, which was one solution they had also tried). Simple good design with a touch of humor – love it. There’s a number of places online where you can find this and similar “fisticups”.
