OMHU Cane Instructions and Warranty Information

Using a cane improperly is dangerous. Please follow these important instructions and warnings to reduce the risk of injury.
1.  The OHMU cane is not for everyone.  Therefore, please consult your medical professionals before using the OMHU cane.  We want to be sure that you are physically capable of walking with the OMHU cane and that you select the right device for your personal needs. Some people are better served with quad canes, walkers or wheel chairs.
2.  Don’t ignore warning signs.  Please stop walking if you feel dizzy or weak and consult your doctor or other medical provider immediately.  If you have discomfort from gripping and holding the cane, discontinue use immediately and consult your doctor.
3.  Weight Limit.  The Omhu cane provides ambulatory assistance for individuals up to 300 lbs/135 kg maximum.  The Omhu cane is designed to provide assistance, support and stability while walking.  It is not designed to support total weight.  It is important to follow the directions below carefully.
4.  Inspect, Inspect and Inspect.
Inspect on Delivery.  We inspect all products carefully before shipping. However, sometimes a product can get damaged in transit.  Therefore, before using the cane, please inspect it carefully. If there is any damage, DO NOT use the cane.  Contact retailer/dealer for further instruction.
Inspect Shaft.  At least once a week, inspect your cane for damage. If there appear any cracks or dents in the wooden shaft, DO NOT use the cane.  Contact retailer/dealer for further instruction.
Inspect Rubber Tip.  Periodically check the rubber tip for wear, tears or cracks.  If any of these conditions exist, discontinue use and replace the rubber tip immediately.  Replacement tips are available at omhu.com
5.  Size Properly – How to Properly Size Your OHMU cane.  Before using, be sure you have the proper size cane because having the wrong size can result in a fall or other serious injuries.  The sizing directions are as follows:

  • Have someone help you by measuring the distance from your wrist joint to the floor while you are standing straight and your arm relaxed as shown in the photo below.
  • Select the cane size that falls within the three options.
  • If a person is between two sizes they should round down to the smaller size cane. For example 5’ 9 and ½” should be rounded down to 5’9”.
  • If you are smaller than 4’10” or taller than 6’3” you should order a custom size from omhu.com or contact your Omhu retailer or distributor for more information.  Canes should only be cut by an authorized Omhu dealer.

6.  Use Properly — How to use your OMHU cane
These instructions should not replace your medical professional’s instructions.  Use the cane only after your medical professional shows you how to use the cane properly.
Here are some general guidelines:
You should use your cane on the opposite side of your injury or weakness, regardless of which hand is your dominant one. If your left leg or hip is weak or injured, then hold the cane with your right hand.  If your right leg or hip is weak or injured, then hold the cane with your left hand.
Stand normally with cane tip meeting the floor flatly. Hold the top of the handle. Hold handle securely.
The cane moves with the weak/injured side.  Put your weight on your unaffected/strong leg, and then step with your weak/injured leg and the cane at the same time a comfortable distance forward. With your weight supported on both your cane and your weak/injured leg, step through with your unaffected/strong leg.
Continue in this manner, taking short smooth steps to insure balance. Never place your cane too far in front of you.
Going upstairs:  Take the first step with your unaffected/strong leg.  Then move the cane and weak/injured leg to that same step.  Repeat.  Keep your free hand on the railing when going up or down stairs.
Going downstairs: Take the first step down with the cane and the weak/injured leg.  Then, lower the unaffected/strong leg to the same step.  Repeat.  Keep your free hand on the railing when going up or down stairs.
Again, it is important to have your medical professional show you how to use the cane.  Failure to use the cane properly can result in a fall or other serious injuries.
